Posting my collection of Chinese Bayonets to date for reference. Two AK47 Models, a Dark Brown and Light Brown Handle Variants. Three AKM Models, Black, Green and Orange Variants. The last two are not considered legitimate, however I like them in the collection.

Re: Chinese Bayonet Collection
I believe that all the grips are natural Chu wood to start. They are naturally a light tan color. The darker colors are a result of an added varnish finish. The Chu wood is resistant to stains. The painted-on finishes very from gold, reddish to dark brown in color. Some of the time they even tried to match the bayonets to the finish on a series of Rifles, (PolyTech),. You can either apply colored varnish to a light one or remove the finish to make a natural light one. Notice on the dark grip pictured above that the varnish has worn off in places near the pommel.
