Hi Stefan, Markings like this are very common in the USA and some other countries. They are the result various customs / import laws. These laws always seem to be in a state of flux. The need for adding and method vary from time to time. Sometimes a whole shipment has to be marked, other times individual items. They can be found ink stamped, hand etched, metal die stamped or just a sticker. Examples are the Hungarian ones die stamped on the crossguard various ways. China, die and ink stamped, etched or stickered. E. German, ink stamped or stickered.
Not much can be done with the die stamped or etched on, but the ink ones rub off with alcohol or mild solvent. Mr. B.
