Russian AK47 Scabbard No Drain Hole

Post by LanceF250 »

This recent addition has me confused. The scabbard is lacking a drain hole. however, the scabbard and hanger appear early Russian to me.

I am also confused by this bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet appears to be a Russian AK47 originally made by Izhevsk. However, the Russian military acceptance on the right side of the pommel is missing. This means that it was made for contract or export use. In addition to that it has been reworked / repaired and re-numbered. The original finish has been removed and it has been refinished / painted. Note the overspray on the blade ricasso. The grip panels have been removed and replaced. Note the stake marks on the grip retaining nuts. When the grips were removed the original numbers on the left side of the pommel were ground off and new numbers hand etched over the grinding. The scabbard is also weird, but possible. Early scabbard have been found without the drain holes, but most were added during inspections and reworking. Most of the scabbards without holes were made for contract or export. The hanger does appear to be a standard Russian one. Correct fabric and rivet. My best guess is a contract / export version that has been reworked at some subsequent point in time. Mike

I did notice one, and possibly two, proof(?) marks stamped in the scabbard point flanges. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable in the markings might be able to identify the scabbard? Mike

I believe it’s just one. Looks like an 11?inside a diamond.
