Valmet Bayonets
A few variations of the Valmet bayonet. Not mine...found pic online a long time ago.
I have Hackman and Fiskars variants. Normally they have the maker marked on the handle, but sometimes there is no maker name there.

Re: Valmet Bayonets
When I got mine F and H models they were very expensive so I had to give up models without producer name on handle.
Re: Valmet Bayonets
This is my Valmet. It is unmarked and has the short clip point. I do not have a Fiskars or Hackman version. I keep this one as a representative sample in a side collection as it is not a true Kalashnikov bayonet. Note the unusual means of attachment, the long bayonet mounting lug is part of the flash hider. It mounts from the front, unlike the similar Czech VZ58 which slides on from the rear. M.
Re: Valmet Bayonets
Here are close-up views of the Valmet M62 showing the three different manufactures. Fiskars, Hackman and Unknown. Notice the difference in the grip rib molding and the release catch button. Also note the different metal finishes. Blued, parkerized and black crinkle paint. Even the rivets are different. The unmarked version may not be a third company but made by Fiskars and/or Hackman as a "sterile" contract for internal use or export. Mike

Re: Valmet Bayonets
The original Finnish version of the Kalashnikov AK47 was the M60-1. The bayonet made for it was a Finnish modification of the Italian M38 folding blade bayonet with the latch lock mounting catch. Finland had imported these rifles and bayonets during earlier wars. The early M60 had muzzle rings the later ones did not. Finland made up their own folded leather scabbards that held the bayonet when folded. Here are pictures of two early versions and one later one. Mike
Re: Valmet Bayonets
While we are on the subject of Valmet M62 bayonet and scabbard variations here are a few different scabbards that can be found. Some of the folded leather scabbards can be found with three or four body rivets and in both natural tan and green finish. Others can be found with eleven rivets. These rivets are usual aluminum or aluminum alloy. There are different types of rivets and setting. Also note that the scabbards can also be found made of green synthetic leather made of a vinyl or plastic type material,(lower picture). The last picture is a scabbard made of white leather for parade/dress usage. Mike
Re: Valmet Bayonets
Very interesting, especially since I own an early latch lock Beretta M38 (the SMG version without the muzzle ring) bayonet.
I suppose the Valmet version is uber scarce?

Re: Valmet Bayonets
Here is another small variation I have observed in the Finnish M62-72 Valmet bayonets. It seems the Fiskars logo and grip molding, (raised ridges), were changed at some point. Mike

Here is yet another scabbard variation. Mike

Re: Valmet Bayonets
I'm needing to get one for my M-76.
Re: Valmet Bayonets
Mike, that last, natural leather sewn scabbard looks like a Fiskars fishing knife scabbard to me.
May not be, but that is what it looks like.

Re: Valmet Bayonets
I agree, and it could well be. The similarities are there. However in my experience the Finnish filet / fishing knives have a thinner narrower blade and a more tapered hilt were it meets the blade. The scabbards are a lighter weight leather and often have commercial marking and decorations. The pictures I posted seemed that the scabbard matched the bayonet.

Re: Valmet Bayonets
Mike,
Fiskars also makes a hunting knife of the same design with a wider blade. Another possibility for the origin of the scabbard.

Re: Valmet Bayonets
Yes, I agree it could easily be a non-military civilian scabbard. I just posted the picture just because it was different. However I have seen similar scabbards with various badges and inscriptions attached. NCO, Officers, commemoratives, special awards or prizes, etc. One of a kind, unauthorized, collectors market who knows? I don't collect the non- Military items so have little interest or knowledge of them. Mike

For example. Mike
Re: Valmet Bayonets
Here is another Finnish Valmet bayonet scabbard for discussion. These pictures are from about 10 years ago and were identified as Valmet Fiskars with new style scabbard. Production or fantasy? Commercial or Military? Anyone have any knowledge of these scabbards? Mike
Re: Valmet Bayonets
Many years ago, I was told that the Finn bayonet scabbards & rifle slings were all made from reindeer leather, so they don’t freeze.
Not sure how true that is, but thought I'd post the information.
