Chinese NDM-86 6X4 Type II Bayonet and Scabbard

Post by Mr. B. »

China did make a few AKM Type II wire cutter bayonets and scabbards. They were not made for internal issue or use. They were designed for and manufactured in very limited quantities for the commercial/collectors market. Most were exported as accessories with the Chinese NDM-86 sniper rifles which were almost an exact copy of the Russian Dragunov. The bayonet and scabbard are also a copy of the Russian ones. Similar to previous Chinese AK47 and AKM bayonets and scabbards, no hanger or wrist straps were designed or manufactured.

Pictures below are of a Chinese NMD-86 next to a Russian Izhevsk 6X4 Type II for comparison. Notes and details to follow.

Here are more comparison pictures. Note that the NMD-86 is completely unmarked and is more of flat brown color. Also note that the pivot hole in the blade is oval shaped and is parallel with the blade edges and not canted like the Russian 6X4.

More comparison pictures. Note that the metal handle parts are painted with a glossy black paint. The pommel is slightly different and more squared in shape, the grip has more of a palm swell ant the gap between the grip and cross guard is filled with sealant. Also no rivets are visible in the cross guard.

Note that the scabbard ribs are a slightly different shape and definition and molding. The metal cutter plate parts are also slightly different in shape and finish. Another observation is that the grip and scabbard material is a solid brown color and not marbled like the Russian ones. It also has a more "plastic" feel than the material.

Here are a couple borrowed pictures of how these NMD-86 rifles, bayonets and scabbards were exported/imported. It is unknown how many, but not all the approximately 3000 rifles imported to the USA came with bayonets. Note that the delux case has the bayonet in the lower right corner.

It would seem a few of these bayonets were imported separately perhaps as left over or over runs. Mine did not come with a rifle, but was purchased separately sealed in a plastic bag.

A lot of guys who bought these rifles sold off the bayonets. I have in the past actually traded guys Russian 6X4 bayonets for these and got cash to boot, because they wanted a Russian bayonet for their Dragunov. I am sure there are a lot of people out there with regrets over doing that sort of thing. The ones that came with the rifles were also bagged, BTW.

Can still buy the rifles from China. Don't remember the last price I was quoted..maybe about $2500. But in SA currency terms, it is way overpriced and not worth importing. They don't want to sell me bayonets, claiming they don't produce bayonets for most of their commercial arms nowdays, and those that they do make, they only make with an order for the guns. I tried to ask if there is anything lying in the warehouses, but the concept baffles them.

This is my NDM bayonet of my collection. It is the only one I was ever offered and I personally never saw one for sale.
Mine came from a European private collection.
I think its an interesting piece and when compared to a russian or polish etc, I totally agree it feels kind of toyish. I get the feeling of holding a “fake” ak bayonet.
There are no markings of any kind on my example.
