Russian Kalashnikov Bayonet and Scabbard Evolution

Post by Mr. B. »

Here is another article on Kalashnikov Bayonet evolution that was recently posted on the Guns Forum. The article is written in Russian Cyrillic, but can be translated using Google Translate and others. Pictures and illustrations are self explanatory.

I was just coming here to post that!
Was sent it by member Tal Kats. Once I went through it translated, it is one of the more important articles I have read so far, and it has a lot of good info.
It also confirms a lot of info we had deduced, but brings up some new info that is important.
I am going to try and compile this into an English pdf too.
Seems that the Type 1 "square round back" is not just an arsenal repair? We should be going through this article and discussing some of the points in it.
There are also a fascinating amount of small variations that I didn't know to look for, that I now need to examine and look for in my collection.
Thanks for sharing Mike.

Yes indeed the "square" pommel 6X3 being produced only by Izhevsk is an interesting bit of info.
One that falls under sometimes you're too smart for your own good also has come to light from this article. I had one of the 6X2 bayonets with the crappy molded Aluminum handles at one time. Thought it was some sand dweller repair job and sold it cheap for a guy who wanted to take it apart and use the blade. Duh. Oh well, live and learn.
