Romanian AKM 6X3 Type I PSL Bayonets & Scabbards

Post by Mr. B. »

This subject regards the Romanian AKM 6X3 Type I bayonets and scabbards issued with the Romanian PSL rifles. These bayonets are exactly the same as the ones issued with the AKM rifles with one exception, they have a single letter serial number that matches with the PSL rifle numbers. According to the records I have available the ones with numbers D XXXX and E XXXX were produced in 1976. Numbers F XXXX were from 1977 and H XXXX in 1979. There were also a few K XXXX and L XXXX made in 1980. Later in 1999-03 a few were made for export with R XXXX. This information is not complete and only a limited sampling, but give a good idea of numbers and dates. This information is from the matching numbered bayonets and rifles that are documented. The rifles have a year date as well as the serial numbers. The pictures below show the unique PSL mounting method with the separate mounting stud and muzzle brake. Also a PSL bayonet from my collection that came with a matching PSL rifle kit. Mike

It has been brought to my attention that PSL rifles and bayonets have been recorded in 1974 with C XXXX serial numbers as well. Mike

Romanian Type I / M.63
Nothing special, is it?
A very heavily used Romanian bayonet, not the special highlight of a prestigious collection, but very interesting.
The Scabbard is special.
Contrary to all romanian Bayonetscabbard, this is galvanized, without numbering and stamp.
I never saw one like that again.
Unfortunately, I no longer know when and where it came into my collection.

Rumänisches Typ I/ M.63

I am currently working on a project to document the issue and availability of the Romanian PSL Bayonets and Scabbards. To do this I am starting with the information available on the PSL rifle production dates and serial numbers. These rifles were issued with accessories that were given matching numbers including scopes, magazines, and bayonets. The serial numbers on the rifles also contained the production year therefor dating the accessories as well. The common denominator is the single letter prefix used in the serial numbers. Here is what I have so far. PSL production code letter and date followed by bayonet issued confirmation by collectors or pictures. Please help filling in missing info and add numbers, (pictures), from your bayonets. Thanks, Mike

So far all have been confirm except M, N, P and R. Those are the ones that match with the known PSL rifle codes. There may be other letter codes as well. M.

Here is what I have so far. Five different Romanian PSL 6X3 Type I bayonets and scabbards. I still need letter prefix, "G", "H", "K" that have been confirmed. Letter prefixes "M", "N", "P" and "R" may also exist, but are not documented. Mike

This is a picture of a Romanian PSL rifle serial number. This one was made in 1976 at the Cugir Arsenal. Note the Single letter and 4 numbers also used on the bayonets and scabbards matched to and issued with the rifle. Mike

Thanks for sharing. It's only a scabbard, but it confirms that a "N" prefix PLS exists. It still leaves "M" and "P" to be confirmed. Mike

I have C 7300. It has a red insulator and black frog. The scabbard is not serialized.

I'll need to dig it out to post pics. Mike - you might recall it from the other forum?
