Re: Unknown - Mystery AKM Type II Bayonet

I have tried to compare this mystery bayonet to those from other ComBloc countries production and this is the closest match I have found. Below it is pictured with a Romanian AKM Type I bayonet. Could this be an early attempt by Romania to make a Type II bayonet and sold to Iraq with Type I bayonets...

Re: Unknown - Mystery AKM Type II Bayonet

More comparison pictures, Egyptian vs Mystery bayonet. Notice different saw teeth and the straight finish grind on the blade vs the circular marks on the mystery one. The hilt is also missing all the yellow gunk usually found around the grip edges. The scabbard has a smooth body and a milled cutter ...

Unknown - Mystery AKM Type II Bayonet

This is one of three "Egyptian(?)" bayonets that I picked off a pile in Kuwait City in 1991. I had just started collecting AK bayonets and the only reference I had seen at that time was an article with pictures in the April 1987 issue od "Soldier of Fortune" magazine. My goal the...

Egyptian AKM Type I Scabbard Variations

The Egyptians only manufactured AKM Type II bayonets and Type I scabbards on machinery and technology provided by the Soviet Union, (USSR). The Egyptian scabbards are different from most, if not all, of those made else where. They use a stamped steel cutter plate installed in the scabbard body with ...

Egyptian AKM Bayonet Blade Variations

These pictures show some of the differences in the Egyptian AKM blade profiles and shapes. The early ones, like the brown grip one, had blades similar to other ComBloc countries with a "hooked/Bowie" point. The more recent ones and ones from the Balkan contracts have somewhat shorter blade...

Re: Egyptian AKM Type II Brown Grip Bayonet

Here's a Egyptian AKM Type II brown grip from my collection. I picked up three bayonets in 1991 in Kuwait as I was just starting to collect AK bayonets. The only reference I had was from the article in the April 1987 issue of 'Soldier of Fortune' magazine. I was hoping to find an Egyptian one like t...

Egyptian AKM Wrist Strap Variations

This is something that I had noticed when inspecting Egyptian AKM bayonets. Like most fabric wrist straps there are different colors/shades of these straps. However I also noticed two different distinctive weave patterns, square vs diagonal. M.

Re: Gray Hanger

Nice find and a very interesting theory! We do see a lot of DDR bayonets and parts in various places and in use in different countries, so quite interesting to speculate. From hangers and hooks to insulators and entire scabbards. I've seen black rubber insulators with DDR numbers on all sorts of oth...

Re: Russian 6X5 plum prototype

I agree that the price seems too high. To me this doesn't seem to be a "prototype". The amount of set-up and tooling required to make these bayonets and scabbards would make it impractical to produce just a few samples. I would rather think that this was a production run for at least field...

Good advice. A couple of mine came with bayonets from a friend in Lithuania and others from dealers in Latvia and Poland via eBay connections. I also have a couple spares to trade or sell. M.

Re: New style VZ58 scabbard?

Yes, examples of this new scabbard in both foliage and desert camo have been listed in eBay. Whether they were a commercial copy or a military overrun is unknown. The Czechs started development of a 5.56mm rifle system from 1986 -89 and adopted System "Lada" in 1991. This system included a...

Note that one has an early blued finish scabbard and the others are painted black. Also one has a stitched rath...
