Finland AK47 Bayonet and Scabbard Variations

These three bayonets and scabbards are from Finland, but have Russian Izhesvk arsenal marks, (arrow in triangle,) on the left side of the cross guard. All three came from Finland in like new, unused condition, coated with grease and hangers wrapped in wax paper and tied with string. All three have 4...

Here are four different versions of the Russian AK47 bayonets and scabbards. Descriptions are according to MDI's book. Left to right as follows: Early pattern, hand etched serial number on the left side of pommel, smooth leather hilt strap. Next, later pattern, number stamped on the right side, pebb...

Re: Russian bayonets for AK-47

The Finnish serial numbers are stamped in the left side of the pommel at a 45 degree angle where as the Russian ones follow the curved edge of the pommel. The Finnish ones also found with a blued or black painted finish. The main differences are found in the scabbard. Brian is correct. The Finnish o...

Iraqi Tabuk AKM Type II

This is an AKM Type II (6X4) bayonet and scabbard manufactured in Iraq and known as a Tabuk. They were built on equipment supplied by the Zastava Arsenal in Yugoslavia and are very close copies to the ones made there. The main differences are the color and different mold marks. M. Re: Type I Flat Pommel Variation

My apologies. This is a correction from the previous post. I should read, " I have HAD six or seven flat pommels in my possession ...." I presently only have the two shown in the pictures. They were retained to represent the two different versions. The others were sold or traded to other c...

Re: Type I Flat Pommel Variation

Something else to notice on flat pommel Romanian bayonets as well as the other types. Observe the wear marks on the sides of the cross guards. If there are semi elliptical marks on one or both sides one can tell if that bayonet has been worn with a one or two piece snap hook hanger and not the wrapa...

Re: North Korean AK47 Scabbard Close-ups

Very nice. I wasn't aware of this scabbard variation. I agree that it is North Korean from the configuration of the hanger bar and the way it looks from the front side and the material and construction of the hanger. Now I have to find one of those and a N.K. transitional AK47/AKM bayonet. I hate to...

North Korean AK47 Scabbard Close-ups

Most Combloc countries made their AK47 scabbard bodies from a metal tube. The tube was flattened and crimped to a point and spot welded. An attachment bar or bars were then spot welded near the throat to attach the hanger. The North Koreans used a flat piece of sheet metal rolled around a mandrel an...

North Korean AKM Variation #2

This a second version of the North Korean AKM bayonet. It is virtually the same as the first version with the exception that the Fabric hanger is tan colored. The tan versions have been found in Granada, Panama and Cuba among other places. There is some discussion as to whether they were made in N. ...

This is a North Korean Ak47 with wood grip panels. This bayonet is virtually the same as ones from other ComBloc countries. Only minor variations in the blade finish, markings and the scabbard which is made of formed sheet metal and spot welded together the length of one side.

here's one last picture of the left side of the pommels. The ridge around the catch button is round in shape on the GH and more squared off on the latter version. The small ridge on the opposite side is also a different shape. M.

Re: Type I Flat Pommel Variation

There are actually two different versions of these flat pommel bayonets. They differ in the shape of the pommel and the ridge around the catch button. The one I'll call an earlier version has a GH xxxx serial number. Although the serial prefix does not necessarily indicate age. I call it earlier as ...

South African R1 Series

This is a South African R1 bayonet and scabbard. It is for their FN-FAL style weapons. This is the type of bayonet that was modified to fit on the South African Galil/Kalashnikov style R4 rifle. The R4 is featured in Martin Ivie's book "Kalashnikov Bayonets". IMG_2405.JPG IMG_2406.JPG IMG_...
